Women to Watch 2027:
A Book Arts Revolution

Claire Van Vliet, Dido and Aeneas, 1989; Monoprint and handmade paper, 15 x 42 x 6 in.; National Museum of Women in the Arts

In celebration of the National Museum of Women in the Arts’ 40th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of its Women to Watch series, Women to Watch 2027 explores the dynamic world of book arts—works of art in book form that challenge and reimagine what a book can be. From sculptural and hand-stitched objects to zines and graphic narratives, these pieces invite readers and viewers alike to experience stories through touch, texture, and form.

The San Francisco Advocacy for the National Museum of Women in the Arts (SFA NMWA) is proud to participate in this milestone project by highlighting the extraordinary talent of Bay Area artists working in book arts today. Our local Women to Watch 2027 exhibition will open in fall 2026, showcasing the work of our three nominated artists and the vision of our selected curator.

Each artist brings a distinctive approach to the medium, blending text, image, and structure to illuminate personal narratives and contemporary themes.
