Women to Watch 2027:
A Book Arts Revolution

Claire Van Vliet, Dido and Aeneas, 1989; Monoprint and handmade paper, 15 x 42 x 6 in.; National Museum of Women in the Arts

The National Museum of Women in the Arts celebrates two milestones in 2027: its 40th anniversary and the 20th anniversary of its Women to Watch series. This year's exhibition explores book arts, works that challenge traditional ideas of what a book can be. Artists create sculptural objects, hand-stitched pieces, zines, and graphic narratives that invite audiences to experience stories through touch, texture, and form.

The San Francisco Advocacy for the National Museum of Women in the Arts (SFA NMWA) is participating by highlighting Bay Area artists working in book arts today. Our local Women to Watch 2027 exhibition opens in fall 2026 and will showcase three nominated artists and our selected curator.

Each artist brings a distinctive approach to the medium, blending text, image, and structure to illuminate personal narratives and contemporary themes.
